Innovative videos combat violence against women
At the beginning of February, the Ponto Final Campaign launched innovative videos to combat violence against girls and women. The material has opted for a reflective approach with reference to everyday life. The initiative seeks to change attitudes and social beliefs related to discrimination, inequality and gender inequality that sustain and promote violence against women.
Lojas Renner, Instituto Consulado da Mulher and Tânia de Almeida receive Award Giving for change
On January 26 in Rio de Janeiro, the winners of the 2010 Giving for change Awards were presented. The event brought together businesspeople, donors, grantees for the Fund and other guests at FIRJAN's headquarters. In the Corporate category, the night's winner was Lojas Renner. For Foundations and Institutes, the prize went to the Consulado da Mulher Institute. And Tânia de Almeida, a donor to the Casa da Mulher Trabalhadora, was the winner in the individual donor category.
News in Borel, Cidade de Deus and Batan
The end of 2010 brought several new developments for the "Elas em movimento" program, a Chevron project run by ELAS. The women's group from Borel, for example, has finished training in women's human rights, conflict resolution, administration, finance, entrepreneurship, communication and marketing. The members have also decided to rent equipment for children's parties as a business and to name it Celebrando Festas e Cia.
Honorary Councillor takes over Secretariat for Racial Equality
Luiza Helena de Bairros has taken up the post of Chief Minister of the Secretariat for Policies to Promote Racial Equality (SEPPIR). The sociologist is an Honorary Councillor of ELAS. In her first speech, she gave special thanks to the black movement. She then pointed out that this part of organized civil society has always demanded the creation of policies to combat and eliminate racism, a factor that still excludes the black population from access to rights and opportunities.
ELAS has group of representatives in Belgium
No dia 14 de novembro, no primeiro encontro “Mulheres apoiando Mulheres” foram lançadas as atividades do ELAS em Bruxelas, na Bélgica. Estiveram presentes 18 mulheres, a maioria brasileira, que responderam ao chamado de discutir formas de apoiar o Fundo e também se organizar para ser referência para as brasileiras imigrantes. A atividade teve o apoio da ONG Art’Nativa Brasil, que é uma associação para a promoção da cultura brasileira formada por mulheres e que desde o início abraçou a idéia do ELAS.

Maria Mulher receives award from Rio Grande do Sul government
The organization black women Maria Mulher was nominated to receive the Deputado Carlos Santos trophy in the category of Affirmative Policies Directed at black women, awarded by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The trophy is awarded to personalities who have worked or are working on behalf of the black community.
ConMujeres brings together LBT project groups
In October, the grantees through the LBT Project of ConMujeres (Consortium of Latin American and Caribbean Women's Funds) met in Guatemala to evaluate two years of activities. On this occasion, women from different parts of the Southern Cone had the opportunity to exchange experiences and share reflections.
International Seminar: Sexual Rights, Feminisms, Lesbianities: Diverse Perspectives
O Seminário Internacional: Direitos Sexuais, Feminismos, Lesbianidades – Olhares Diversos, organizado pela Associação Lésbica de Minas (ALEM) aconteceu entre os dias 03 e 05 de novembro, em Belo Horizonte (MG). O evento contou com a participação de 300 pessoas e teve como objetivo articular a temática da diversidade sexual, especialmente a lesbianidade, a outras categorias como raça, classe e aspectos geracionais para a compreensão e o enfrentamento da violência contra as mulheres.
Giving for change Award: winners to be announced on December 1st
No dia 01 de dezembro, às 19h, no Rio de Janeiro, acontece a apresentação dos vencedores do Prêmio Doar para Transformar. O evento, com entrada gratuita, será realizado na sede da Firjan (Avenida Graça Aranha, 01 – Centro). Participam dessa edição Instituto Avon, Instituto Consulado da Mulher, Fersol, Lojas Renner, Angela Moysés Nogueira Rodrigues e Tânia Mara Martines de Almeida. A iniciativa tem o apoio de Unifem, Firjan e Chevron e divulgação da Revista Pequenas Empresas Grandes Negócios, da Editora Globo.
Break the cycle: International Day of Non-Violence against Women
November 25th is the International Day of Non-Violence against Women. Data from the Secretariat for Women's Policies shows that reports of violence against women rose 112% from January to July 2010, compared to the same period last year. In the first seven months of this year, the Women's Call Center, a toll-free number for complaints, registered more than 300,000 calls, compared to around 160,000 in the same period last year.
Black Awareness Day: for women's rights black women
Black Awareness Day falls on November 20th. The date is dedicated to reflecting on the inclusion of black people in society. For example, research by the Ethos/Ibope Institute shows that only six black women are executives in the 500 largest Brazilian companies. Corporate culture and the lack of affirmative action explain this scenario.
